 What is functional neurology?

Functional neurology is an approach that does not use drugs or surgery for treatment. We assess many conditions by using windows to the nervous system. While looking into these windows we can see if there are any parts of the brain or spinal cord not working as they should. Once an area of deficiency has been identified, we can begin to stimulate that specific area or areas of the brain with customized exercises and tasks. Harmonizing the brain’s ability to function in this way has profound outcomes in movement, behavior, posture, mood, and general well-being.

Why should everyone have a functional neurological exam?

The chiropractic adjustment has significant effects on the brain. A neurological exam helps guide us safely when performing the adjustment without worsening a compromised area of the brain and the associated symptoms. By sending the correct stimulus to the brain we can expedite treatment based on the functional neurological exam.

What is the functional neurology exam like?

We look at posture, head tilts, and eye function to name a few. The eyes are a very important window into your brain function. Some of the exam techniques have a potential to be used as a treatment method. For example, visual stimulation with a striped scarf (called an optokinetic tape) can be used to both examine the eyes and also to treat the findings. This is the foundation of functional neurology.

What are the rehabilitation exercises like?

The functional neurological exam determines the specific brain rehabilitation exercises for the individual. This will differ for each person. Treatments can include chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapies, and stimulation of the visual, auditory, vestibular, and/or any one of the other sensory systems.

How soon can I expect to see improvements?

It is not uncommon for people to experience some degree of immediate improvement after one treatment. This improvement can be seen with pain, brain fog, or vertigo, to name a few. Lasting changes from chronic or complex conditions may take longer. I like to have patients commit to between three to six months of care and it is unusual for patients to not see significant improvement within this time.
